When I saw this magnificent kitchen that is part of England’s grandest stately homes; Audley End in Essex, it immediately made me think of the television period drama, Downton Abbey. It is easy to imagine the ‘below stairs’ world where the cook and servants would spend hours preparing meals for the bustling country estate. This kitchen is taken from a new book ‘The Life of the British Home: An Architectural History by Edward Denison and Guang Yu Ren (£24.99, Wiley). The book is available to pre-order from amazon.co.uk. What is so great about this room is that it has all the original elements of the classic country kitchen such as open shelves that can be used to display beautiful copper cookware (big on the high street at the moment), a preparation table for rolling out pastries and a statement light that is so practical when making food. Do you think you can imagine yourself in a kitchen like this?

Oh, I think I could, but I would have to have someone to help me reach the top shelves!

That’s a very nice kitchen, I can easily imagine myself preparing dough for a batch of cupcakes! I love big kitchens, yet I’ve heard that it’s better to have a small kitchen – then you don’t need to walk too far to the sink, to the oven, to the table etc. Still the though of being able to display all pretty kitchen ware is very appealing…
